Have your say on helping to preserve two Adur conservation areas

Residents are being invited to have their say on ensuring parts of North Lancing and Sompting are granted greater protection.
Adur District Council wants to extend a conservation area at North Lancing, which boasts a number of listed buildings, including the 13th Century St James the Less Church, which is a landmark building in the conservation area.
We are proposing to include the burial ground off Upper West Lane, north of the A27, as well as an area of land within Lancing Manor Park that approximately corresponds with the historic remains associated with the demolished manor house.
This encompasses the northern boundary with The Street to include the mature trees and historic flint walls that add to the character of the conservation area.
There are no boundary changes suggested for Sompting conservation area, which is partly within South Downs National Park.
Cllr Steve Neocleous, Adur's cabinet member for regeneration and strategic planning, said:
“The aim is to ensure that these two precious areas are preserved for future generations to enjoy.
“The proposed boundary change at North Lancing is designed to maintain and enhance the historic character of the area and to restrict development that is not in keeping with the character of the area.”
The consultation will run until 30th November 2023 to give residents a chance to have their say on the proposals. The consultation includes the council's character appraisal of the area, which describes the historical context of the area, its character and setting.
It also makes recommendations for the protection of the area, including improvements to public spaces between buildings, tighter planning controls in newly-included areas and raising awareness of the area and guidance for any new developments.
